Every 3 hours an American mother is told her child has died from gun violence.

Common sense gun laws can stop this deadly cycle, but parents can also make a huge difference.

It is a known fact that every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult. Here in America, one out of three homes with children has a gun, many kept unlocked or loaded.Every year thousands of kids are killed and injured as a result through homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings.

Gun violence is complicated, but keeping guns secured and out of the hands of kids is not. Guns can be stored more safely by keeping them unloaded and locked up, using a gun safe/trigger lock, and keeping bullets in a separate locked location. Storing guns responsibly means fewer guns being carried into our schools, fewer tween and teen firearms suicides, and fewer unintentional child shootings.

Parents ask all sorts of questions before their children visit other homes, so it's time to ASK about guns. States United is partnering with The Asking Saves Kids (ASK) Campaign to encourage parents to add one more question to this conversation: “Is there an unlocked gun in your house?” It’s a simple question, but it has the power to save a child’s life.

The ASK Campaign was created in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics. Across the country, it has successfully inspired an estimated 19 million households to ask if there are guns where their children play.1

  • Stop Murder Insurance

Two insurance companies, Chubb and Lockton Affinity, have partnered with the NRA to provide “NRA Carry Guard” insurance to gun owners who shoot someone and claim “self defense.” This horrifyingly cynical insurance plan is specifically designed to protect “Stand Your Ground” murderers like Trayvon Martin’s killer, and it provides coverage for criminal legal defense, firearm replacement, clean up costs, a hotline for legal guidance, and other benefits.

“Stand Your Ground” laws cause gun murders to skyrocket – and are radically skewed toward protecting white shooters who kill black victims. Lockton Affinity, which created and sells the Carry Guard insurance, and Chubb Insurance, which underwrites the policies and takes a profit, are perpetuating fear of minorities and immigrants, and by offering special protections to gun owners who shoot first and ask questions later, these insurance companies are promoting gun violence.

Tell Chubb and Lockton to cut their ties with the NRA and Stop Selling Murder Insurance.

In the final act of the Ohio Lame Duck Session, the Ohio Legislature combined two gun lobby bills into one huge disaster for Ohio.

HB 48 was rolled into SB 199 in a dangerous piece of legislation that would open the door for campus carry in Ohio.

The bill would also allow hidden, loaded weapons in Ohio daycares, private aircraft, airports, unattended vehicles in school safety zones, revoke the ability of employers to keep guns out of their parking lots,  reduce the penalty for carrying a gun in the few remaining prohibited places, and allow state and local officials to authorize guns in government buildings.

SB 199 was originally a bill to grant active duty military automatic authority to carry hidden, loaded weapons in our state -- increasing the risk of suicide in this already vulnerable population -- and this remained in the final version.

Ready to go? Enter your info below to get started:

Step 1: Call Ohio Governor Kasich.

Sample call script - you'll be leaving a voicemail or speaking to a staffer: "Governor Kasich should veto SB199 in order to protect Ohio's higher education reputation and stop the gun lobby's Guns Everywhere agenda. 1 in 3 students at the Ohio State University come from out-of-state. People like me  -- from across the country and world -- will not invest in college or university tuition in places where campus carry is even a possibility."

  • Tell your US Senators how you feel about their votes to #DisarmHate and tell the House: #NoBillNoBreak.

On June 20, the United States Senate voted on key gun violence prevention proposals. Many of them did the right thing and voted for strong and effective measures to address the terror gap and close loopholes in our background checks by supporting the Feinstein and Murphy amendments.

Outrageously, many of them turned their backs on Americans impacted by gun violence and caved to gun lobby pressure. Unacceptable!

Your US Representative now has the chance to do the right thing on these proposals, but the House is planning on recess at the end of the week for the July 4th holiday. Tell your US Representative - #NoBillNoBreak!

  • Urge your State Senator to Support Governor’s Veto on SB 336, Concealed Carry

In New Hampshire, the gun lobby is attempting to override Governor Hassan's veto of SB 336, a dangerous bill that seeks to undermine public safety and let dangerous individuals legally carry hidden, loaded handguns.

The "suitable person" law has been in place since 1923 and provides local police departments with the discretion to limit concealed carry for those who are a danger to themselves or others. For example, if an individual in a community is a known domestic abuser but has yet to be indicted, or has a habit of getting into bar fights, local police departments have the ability to reject their concealed carry application. This common-sense law prevents known dangerous people from being able to legally carry hidden, loaded weapons.

Governor Maggie Hassan vetoed SB 336 citing public safety concerns from law enforcement and others. On Thursday, the NH State Senate will vote on whether to support or override the Governor’s veto.

Make sure your voice is heard! Contact your State Senator now and urge them to support the veto of SB 336.

    • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among teens and young adults and the 10th leading cause of death among all Americans.
    • On average, 4 teenagers and 118 total Americans complete suicide every day.
    • 90% people who survive a suicide attempt do not go on to die by suicide.
    • Many suicide attempts occur with little planning during a short-term crisis.
    • 50% of suicide deaths in the United States are by firearm.
    • Access to firearms is a risk factor for suicide.
    • Firearms used in youth suicide usually belong to a parent.
    • Reducing access to lethal means, like firearms, saves lives.

    Save lives.

A gun in the home is 22x more likely to be used in a suicide, homicide, or unintentional shooting than for self defense.

If there is a gun in your home:

    1) Keep it unloaded and locked up or with a trigger lock.  Store the bullets in a different place that is also locked.

    2) Do not let children and teens have a key to the places where guns and bullets are stored.

    3) If a household member becomes depressed or has severe mood swings, store the gun outside the home for the time being while you seek help!

After initially sending a cease & desist letter to the Otero County United Way chapter regarding a planned raffle of over 100 guns (including military style weapons), United Way Worldwide secretly reversed its decision to stop the raffle.

Let United Way Worldwide President and CEO Brian Gallagher know that we expect him to act with courage and not cave to the gun lobby. Make your voice heard using our simple tool below.

  • Petition to Ban Assault Weapons

With easy access to a military style assault weapon, a man filled with hate turned a place of celebration and joy for Orlando’s LGBT community into a scene of devastation and loss.

This is the worst mass shooting in America, with 49 shot dead and 53 wounded, many of them young Latinos just beginning their lives. Such mass shootings have been increasing. We say: Enough.

We demand that Congress act to stop the carnage now: Military style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines, which make such shootings possible and so deadly, have no place on our streets. They are made for battlefields, not our schools or our churches or our gathering places. We demand that Congress step up to the plate at last and pass an effective ban on civilian use of these weapons. Please sign our petition.

Once again, history has been repeated. A young man with a gun has massacred nine Americans. After every tragic shooting, our leaders decry the loss of life, then blame partisanship and each other for not finding a solution. This time, in memory of those lost at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, we ask you to stand with us and demand that Congress pledge to act on the plague of gun violence. Please take action by sending this personal pledge to members of Congress.

  • We the people declare that all Americans have the right to live free from fear and free from violence.

We the people declare that all Americans have the right to live free from fear and free from violence.  We want Congress to act to reduce gun violence.

  • Please Call Your Member of the Senate Appropriations Committee

Recently, the House of Representatives approved their version of their Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) Appropriations Act for FY2016 (H.R. 2578) which funds among other agencies, the ATF, who is responsible for enforcing our nation's gun laws.   In the process, House members added 11  so-called “gun riders”  to their bill that will only benefit criminals while tying the hands of law enforcement trying to reduce gun violence.  Now the Senate Appropriations Committee will begin consideration of the CJS Appropriations bill.  We are urging Senators NOT to include these bad gun riders, which in some cases would allow violent felons easier access to dangerous weapons.

When you put in your zip code below, you will get a page that shows your Senator, if he/she is on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and his/her telephone number. The page will also include a prewritten email that you can send to your Senator.  In the draft email are more details about these bad riders.  Can you please send the email and call your Senator.  Tell him/her to work to keep gun riders out of the CJS Appropriations bill.  These riders only make it easier for criminals to get weapons and harder for the ATF and all of law enforcement to go after gun traffickers.  (Note: You can edit and personalize this prewritten email.)

  • Call and Email Your US Senators About a Bad CJS Appropriations Bill

The House passed the CJS Appropriations Bill with many bad gun amendments which will force the ATF to spend money on bad programs and prevent them from passing good regulations.  They must spend funds to reauthorize an old program to allow convicted felons to apply to get their gun rights back.  This program was ended by Congress in 1992.  The ATF will not be allowed to spend funds to strengthen certain regulations such as those on tranferring dangerous weapons like automatic machine guns and armor piercing ammunition that can be used in a new handgun.  Please send this email but also call your two Senators.  Calls are extremely important!

  • Call Your Representative Re Amendments to CJS Appropriations Bill
Please call your US Representative. Tell him/her to vote "No" on any amendments to the CJS Appropriations Bill that would limit the ATF's ability to strengthen the regulations on "gun trusts". "Current rules are allowing "gun trusts" to avoid rules to keep particularly dangerous weapons such as machine guns, sawed off shotguns, silencers out of the hands of felons or others who should not have them. You will also be able to send an email but calls are vital today! Thanks!!

  • Tell Congress to protect women from violent partners and stalkers

Because of the Violence Against Women Act and subsequent updates to the law, women are safer: Individuals who are under domestic violence protection orders or have misdemeanor domestic violence convictions can't legally buy or own guns. But our laws don't address dating partner abuse, and allow convicted stalkers to still have guns. These glaring loopholes put women at risk.

States United to Prevent Gun Violence and the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus are partnering to deliver the message: "It's time for Congress to build on the legacy and success of the Violence Against Women Act by closing the loopholes that let dangerous stalkers and abusive dating partners buy guns."

Use this form to contact your US Senators and your member of the House of Representatives to urge them to co-sponsor Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act.  As soon as you enter your name and address info, it will send an email.  Then it will also give you the phone numbers of your Senators and your House member.  If you can call, please do this as well.  Calls are the most effective way to reach members of Congress.  Just talk to the person who answers the phone and tell them you want your Senator or House member to co-sponsor and support this act to protect women.  Thanks!

At least 1.5 million children in the U.S. are living in homes with unlocked and loaded guns.  Every day at least 6 children under 18 are injured in an unintentional shooting and every three days a child dies.

    This is unacceptable.

Safe storage laws intended to make firearms less accessible to young children and teenagers prevent unintentional shooting deaths as well as teen suicides. Yet only 28 states have child access prevention laws. Some are so weak they merely prohibit an adult from directly providing a firearm to a minor.

Sign the petition below to ask for action on this issue.

  • Day One - Start Your First Call

Thank you for agreeing to make 20 calls in memory of 20 children.  These calls can be made to any one of your members of Congress - your Representative and your two Senators.  You can also call the President.  If you make one call each day, that is wonderful!  You can also make more calls one day than another.  20 calls by the State of the Union Address is the overall goal.  You can do repeat calls to legislators.  You can get friends to call.  Just try to get 20 calls in - every call helps!  The other side pounds legislators with calls and this time we must match them.

Just identify yourself as a constituent to the person who answers the phone and say, "Now is the time for Congress to act and pass sensible gun laws."  Then you can vary it.  Sometimes you can talk about the past shootings and how we must protect children and our families.  Or you can talk about specific measures - an assault weapons ban, background checks on the sales of all guns, a high capacity ammunition magazine ban.

  • Take the Pledge

We stand united to prevent gun violence.

  • Tell Congress to Stop the Dangerous National Concealed Weapons Bill

Send an email to your members of Congress urging them to oppose the National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 822), a bill that would force all states to recognize the concealed carry permits of any other state, no matter how weak their permitting process is.

  • Contact Your Members of Congress

Send an email to your members of Congress to support legislation banning high capacity ammunition magazines like the 33 round one used in Tucson.
